The automotive landscape has seen its fair share of evolution, and the 2023 KIA Sportage is a testament to that progression. I recently had the privilege of spending some quality time with the latest iteration of the Sportage, and it has left me flabbergasted and in awe at how some manufacturers can revolutionise an entire segment and finish being a top Trump. This has been a challenging feat as this vehicle competes with powerhouses like the Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-5.
Aesthetics
KIA has taken a bold step with the Sportage’s design by pushing the boundaries of modern aesthetics. The exterior boasts sharp lines, a prominent grille, and sleek LED lighting that collectively exudes sophistication. The muscular wheel arches and well-defined creases add an element of dynamism, making the Sportage stand out in a crowd. The interior is equally impressive, with a driver-centric cockpit, high-quality materials, and a user-friendly infotainment system. The attention to detail is evident throughout, though a tad more spaciousness in the rear seats could enhance overall comfort. They offer plenty of space, support, and the added pleasure of being heated. Take note of this party trick: the steering wheel is also heated, which the German competition has as an option if available.
The audio system is greatly improved over the previous Sportage; nonetheless, I believe a little more punch would make a world of difference, but this is just my opinion. On the other hand, the call audio felt a touch low, making it difficult to hear the person on the other end.
Technology and infotainment.
KIA has undoubtedly embraced the tech revolution with the new Sportage. The infotainment system is intuitive and responsive, offering features like smartphone integration, navigation, and various connectivity options. The Sportage hosts a new control method for the infotainment and climate control settings. You have a haptic button that enables the climate control and another to control the infotainment system. This new approach to decluttering the control interface is undoubtedly groundbreaking. In the beginning, it may be a challenge to distinguish how you control the different aspects of the interface; however, once you have figured it out, it is a breeze. I recommend spending some time before you set off for your first journey to familiarise yourself with the vast array of options you’ll have access to.
The 12.3-inch curved display is one of the most attractive in the business. Boasting a sleek crystal clear display whilst providing a split-screen functionality option to manage the many available options. The seats are arguably the best in class, too. They offer plenty of space, support, and the pleasure of being heated. Take note of this party trick: the steering wheel is also heated, which the German competition has as an option.
Safety
Driver aid systems contribute to peace of mind with the KIA. Sporting at least six airbags, which include driver, passenger, side and curtain. Overall safety, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking are standard features. Technologies such as front collision avoidance assist, junction turn, Adaptive driving beam and intelligent cruise control are reserved for the top-spec GT-line S.
Performance and efficiency
Under the hood, the Sportage offers a range of engine options; my test mule was powered by a reliable and efficient 1.6l turbocharged Diesel that provides ample power and torque to see off many challenges on our bustling highways and byways. Power is rated at 100kW and 320Nm, which is a balanced combination. My only peeve is the clunky engine noise during extended idling. Nonetheless, highway cruises are seamless, and the sound-deadening efforts by KIA will not go unnoticed as passengers travel in luxury. It remains the choice engine for this product.
The turbocharged engines deliver ample power with sufficient acceleration, making highway merging and overtaking a breeze. The handling is predictable and composed, balancing comfort and sportiness.
Fuel Efficiency
In an era where efficiency matters, the Sportage holds its own; I averaged 6.2L/100 over a distance of 850 km. Remember that this includes sporadic brutal acceleration and comfortable cruising in eco mode. I suspect that the claimed figures can easily be obtained during continuous ownership.
It is a pity we don’t have access to the hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. However, the Sportage provides commendable fuel economy figures, which will, in turn, contribute to keeping those visits to the pump infrequent. While not at the top of its class in this aspect, the Sportage is a responsible choice for those who value both performance and frugality.
Summary
The 2023 KIA Sportage is undeniably a leap forward for the brand. Its striking design, balanced performance, and modern tech features, it competes well in the compact SUV segment. While there’s always room for improvement, particularly regarding rear-seat space and perhaps refining some tech complexities, the Sportage offers a solid package to win over many buyers. The Korean manufacturer has successfully combined style, functionality, and innovation in a way that demands attention. If you’re in the market for a compact SUV that doesn’t compromise on style or substance, the 2023 Sportage is worth a test drive.
To add, head on over to the Volkswagen Tiguan configurator and journey into building a competitor that, pound for pound, will take on the KIA Sportage. You’ll need help to justify the R250,000 difference for the Tiguan. A consumer who values value for their buck will undoubtedly be more conservative and will avoid splurging on nonsensical competitors that overinflate their “options list”. The welcomed no-options lists from alternative manufacturers are wholeheartedly the way to go. The establishment should take a feather from the Kia’s and Toyota’s of the world and offer fully specified vehicles that don’t feel overpriced and leave you underwhelmed.
